The Bachelor of Applied Social Science responds to industry demands
for graduates who can work effectively with people, possess a
well-rounded education, who understand and can use practical and
theoretical social science, and who can think critically and
analytically.
Students choose a specialisation to address
their interests and professional development needs. Practicums
complement the specialisation and provide real workplace experience.
Graduates
will be reflective practitioners, well suited for employment in an
extensive range of private and public sector industries. Most
importanly, they will understand the social and environmental contexts
of the people with whom they work and the organisations they work
within. Graduates will be capable of functioning effectively as
counsellors and will be highly regarded for their integrated theory and
practice and their ethics and professionalism.
In this module students learn to
understand and apply the skills of effective communication in a wide
variety of contexts and situations. The curriculum covers
self-awareness, personal and interpersonal power, attitudes, values and
perceptions in communication, verbal and non-verbal strategies, the
integration of emotional and intellectual intelligence, dealing with
difference and the skill of working together. This module provides a
solid foundation for counselling, together with indispensable skills
for dynamic interpersonal relationships.
